Read moreThe lab has brought a new high-resolution mass spectrometer into service. Where a standard detector can confirm that something is present at a given concentration, high-resolution mass spectrometry helps pin down what that something actually is — useful when a sample contains compounds close enough in mass or retention time that older instrumentation can't cleanly tell them apart.
For clients, the practical benefit shows up in two places: identifying unknown or unexpected peaks that turn up during a routine screen, and profiling trace-level impurities that sit close to the noise floor on less sensitive equipment. Neither is a new category of testing — it's the same kind of analysis run with a finer instrument.
Before any result generated on the new instrument reaches a certificate, the method it's running has gone through the lab's usual validation and calibration process against reference standards. New hardware doesn't shortcut that step; it just gives the validated methods a more capable instrument to run on.
The instrument is currently supporting a subset of existing testing workflows, with the analysts running it having completed instrument-specific training ahead of go-live. Coverage will expand over the coming months as more methods are validated against it.
This is one piece of an ongoing effort to keep the lab's instrumentation current. As more workflows move onto the new spectrometer, we'll note anything that changes what a certificate looks like or how a result is reported.
